Can we infer that people in some areas still had no surnames?
A:
@littlerita aha wow i see! very interesting! That is some tough English though
1. People used to just have first names.
2. Names to tell people apart were rarely added. (because people rarely traveled, it was unusual to meet a stranger that local people didn't know.)
3. When these second names were added, they were: patronymic (after the father ex. Johnson / Benson / Thomson), descriptive (understood from seeing them ex. Little / Brown / Copperfield), or occupational (from your job ex. smith / archer / cook).
4. They were however not really seen as "surnames" yet.
5. Names passed down thru birth became more widespread thru the country after war in 1066 (maybe because war is very difficult on people, so they needed to travel to find new jobs or start new lives.)
6. After the 13th and 14th centuries, surnames became adopted by pretty much everyone, BUT the continuation of family names depended on different parts of the country (maybe because there was no internet or identification system, people could change their name, change their lives, begin new identities more easily depending on the part of the country)
I'd say from this, that after the 13th and 14th century there were no more people living with just one name anymore. It became part of the culture to have 2 names!
