Yes, it's very common. The English language you learn is not very different from what you here in America, but still varies deeply. A lot of slang comes into play whether it be a new formal version of a word or phrase or something created for fun. Edit: On a side note, that doesn't mean it's always okay to make grammatical mistakes. Just know it's okay if you accidentally let them slip by every now and then.
