"He climbed onto the roof." This means he got on the roof, obviously. You can't say, "He climbed into the roof", because that would somehow mean he was INSIDE the roof rather than on top of it.

A: As a native speaker, I think it is a mistake. "Into the tunnel" is correct in your sentence, not "in to". You are correct that you should always use "into".
The only use of "in to" I can think of is when you mean "in order to".

A: Correct but not usual placement of phrases and words. Sounds like a poem, song or Bible verse type phrasing.

The most common arrangement of the words would be:
I would enter into his presence now.

But even this would probably be said only if you were going to meet a king or God. It is the phrase "into his presence" that seems a little lofty.

For a regular person, you could say, "I am going in to meet (with) him now." This could be going in to see what a doctor has to say. Or meeting a professional to get a bid on some work. Or your boss, to be evaluated on your work performance or to ask for a raise.
