A: It is a very common put down, or slur in the UK. Literally it means that the speaker feels pathos or sorry for the person on thing that they are talking about. But generally in fact it simply means that the thing that they are talking about is bad, in the speaker's opinion.

It's winter, we have no heater, and I have a fever and a runny nose, and I still probably have to go in to work tomorrow... This situation is miserable. I am miserable.


Example 2:
He's 40 years old, and he scored 20% on an elementary school arithmetic test.
That's pathetic.

Maybe he doesn't care, and he is still happy. He is not miserable.
I think his abilities are really low, though, and either I can laugh at him or feel sad for him.
In my opinion, he is pathetic.

A: Pathetic is a much stronger adjective to sad. Additionally, it’s often used to put people down while sad is used mostly as a feeling or emotion.
