Q:
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre prawn y shrimp ?
A:
I’m not an expert but as far as I know, what is identified as shrimp is one having larger front pincers while prawns have bigger second pincers. Both have ten legs but prawns have longer legs. Their gill structure is also different but we can’t see it.
Food wise, they call smaller ones shrimp and larger ones prawns.
Each country differs what they call shrimps and prawns. European countries usually call all of it as prawns, US tends to call all of them as shrimps and if they see larger shrimps they might even call it ‘shrimps on steroids’ because it’s much larger than the shrimps they’ve seen before.
So basically, for most people unless you’re a marine biologist or someone dealing with sea creature classifications, shrimp and prawns are used interchangeably.

Scientifically they're different, but most people couldn't tell you the difference, I bet. It's their body shape and number of claws.
For me personally, I've always thought of shrimp as really small and prawns as big (like the ones you eat in your o-sechi boxes on new years in Japan.) Maybe that's because in America we use the word shrimp for someone who is very small.

It sounds like in US English, prawns are fresh water (from lakes and rivers) and usually bigger. Shrimp are from salt water (oceans and seas).
In British English, shrimp is a specific species (almost same meaning as US English). Prawn includes shrimp and other similar species.
