A: When people attempt to have children, it's usually quite a long-term process and takes months, if not years. As a result, we tend to use progressive tenses to talk about it to highlight its duration — "we started trying to have children", "we've been trying to conceive for months", and so on. While the person could have said "...I knew we would not try for more..." and it would have been equally correct, it doesn't have the same sense of a long, involved process as using the progressive form does.
