"When the snowstorm started, we had stopped skiing and went back to the hotel" is confusing because the action "stop skiing" happened before the snowstorm, but then you use the simple past for "go back to the hotel" - did you go back before the snowstorm? After the snowstorm but because you stopped skiing? After both? It's unnatural because the tenses aren't in agreement with each other and so we can't say it like this.
