"The book writes about a lot of things."
"I don't know what the book writes about."

Are these sentences above correct? I understand what they mean and I'm sure it's totally intelligible but I'm wondering if this is grammatically correct because it's not the book that does the action of writing. But I see expressions like "The newspaper wrote of him, '...'" So I wonder if those sentences are right.
