(If you are introduced to them)
Hello!
Nice to meet you!
(If you meet a stranger somewhere. On the street, restaurant, school,etc....)
Hey/Hi!
and you can fallow it up with:
How are you?
How’s it going?
and so on....

Thanks a lot!Btw,is that polite enough in the first situation you described if they are the elders?
- Inglés (US)
Yeh! You can also say Hey.
In America we are more casual when we talk. Even with teachers! (But when it’s the first time meeting with the teacher, you should probably use ‘Hello’ and then the rest of the time say ‘Hey’)
We don’t have many rules. I know in other languages they have Honorfics or Honorific Titles, but not here in America.

Even though we don’t use honorifics, it is still best to try to be polite by saying “hello” instead of “hi”
