With both you use partitive:
Puuta päin / päin puuta
Kohti tulevaisuutta / tulevaisuutta kohti
So actually as an addition to my previous answer:
"päin" is more concrete while "kohti" can be used when talking about more abstract things. "Päin" is also more straightforward, like you're heading straight to that object when "kohti" is more general "towards" where you might end up stopping before reaching the thing towards which you're headinh or you'll stop somewhere close to it.

kohti = towards
the destination is somewhere further away (you can either see it or not)
--
päin = towards
the same as above AND also when you hit something
Ajaa päin puuta
= to crash the tree (with a car)

@omma
Kiitoksia aina paljon!
Minulla on kysyn.
Kun käytetään ”päin” vai ”kohti”, onko jotain sääntö?
Esimerkiksi partitiivi+päin tai päin+partitiivi, genetiivi, illatiivi jne.
