Когда речь идёт о месте положения мы можем сказать "Около него", но сказать "у него" будет не верно. "У него" используется для обозначени принадлежности:
Около него стоял маленький мальчик. - Место нахождения.
У него был маленький сын. - принадлежность. 
Около неё лежал старый  добродушный пёс.
У неё был старый добродушный пёс.

It seems to me that when these two words are used in the common meaning около=у=at, we can easily interchange them except the case when we are speaking about animate object, than only около will be used. And also у should be used with big objects, when it's small one than use only около.

Веник стоял у двери = веник стоял около двери.
Встретимся около ворот школы = встретимся у ворот школы.
Около лампы стояла ваза (not у лампы, because lamp is rather small).
Около меня стояла моя подруга (not у меня, because I'm animate).
Около собаки на полу лежал поводок (not у собаки, because dog is animate).

It's my understanding, not a rule.

@Caspersander it's also very good! Just a slight accent we hear. I hear in your example человэк too. "- ве"  should be softer.

And now try to improve a little bit "ло", it should be shorter. I'll put an exaggerated example in my audio to make it clear.

and also in Russian we'd never say мило with language😋 I didn't think like that.
"У тебя хороший английский", not "милый английский". "ты неплохо говоришь по-английски", not "ты мило говоришь по-английски" etc. Not the same thing that with "nice".
