They can be used interchangeably, there's no semantical difference between the two.
• "Nós" is a personal pronoun, it literally translates to "we".
• "A gente" is a term which functions as a pronoun and is a semantical equivalent to "nós". However, it sounds a little bit more informal than the former one (at least to me).
----------------------
A few practical examples:
1) "We are going to the shopping."
• Using "nós":
"Nós vamos para o shopping."
• Using "a gente":
"A gente vai para o shopping."
2) "We are very fast."
• Using "nós":
"Nós somos muito rápidos."
• Using "a gente":
"A gente é muito rápido."
Both "nós" and "a gente" suggest exactly the same meaning - the only difference is that using "a gente" implies a little bit more of an informal context than using "nós".
----------------------
Pay attention to the verb form when using "a gente" - it must be conjugated as the third person singular (just like "ele" or "ela"):
• "Nós somos..." / "A gente é..."
• "Nós fazemos..." / "A gente faz..."
• "Nós estamos..." / "A gente está..."
• "Nós cantamos..." / "A gente canta..."
Also, words which have a plural form (such as adjectives, pronouns, etc.) must be singular when using "a gente":
• "Nós somos RÁPIDOS." / "A gente é RÁPIDO."
• "Nós estamos FELIZES." / "A gente está FELIZ."
