A rosary is a beaded loop used as a reminder in Roman Catholicism for prayer. It would be a common item for a devout Roman Catholic to have in his/her possession at all times. A rosary rattler would be someone who is constantly holding his/her rosary and praying. It is not a polite term, probably somewhat akin to “Jesus freak” for evangelical Christians.

I got it completely. Thanks. By the way, what religion do you think the person who said "rosary rattlers" could believe in?
Could it be Protestantism?

You're welcome. Possibly Protestant, but given Hollywood's general lack of belief and the characters on the show, I would guess agnostic/atheist.

Actually the term was used by Sheldon's mother on the show, who is religious to the point of bigoted. Since she used the offensive term "rosary rattlers" to describe Catholics, she is most likely Protestant as @joshwhetstone pointed out rather than an atheist : )

That's true as that is Hollywood's general depiction of Christians, as bigoted, stupid, deluded, or all of the above. Not surprising.

True, but in all fairness the sitcom often pokes fun at many characters with different cultural backgrounds. For example, surely Jews don’t usually have unhealthy, childlike relationships with their mother like Howard’s, and most scientists aren’t into geek stuff and have difficulty navigating social lives like the four main characters. In fact, compared to Leonard’s atheistic psychologist mom (who describes experiments she performed on child Leonard in books entitled something like “The Disappointing Child”), Sheldon’s mom is compassionate to everyone and showers unconditional love on Sheldon despite his quirky personality. After all, if characters in the show are just your average engineers, psychologists or Christians the sitcom wouldn't be quite as hilarious! I guess most viewers would understand that in general the characters are not fair representations of their respective groups =)

Oh definitely, it's completely over the top in its caricatures, and that's fine. That's a key component of its humor. And you have people in real life that nearly fit those characterizations. We probably all know some.
