@richurchoi yeah. That's perfect. Exactly what I would say in that situation.

To me, those are the same.
They are both uncommon in US English, more common in UK English.

@richurchoi usually it's "yelled at" even when they did not actually yell. Or "got mad and told him to stop"
"Lecture" is also used when the interaction is longer.
If you want to be precise, "scold" is often for children "he scolded his son". "Tell off" is very rarely used for children.

@FitzC maybe i shouldve given the specific context.
It's an employee and his boss. he made a typo in an important annual report so he got called into the boss's office.
then would you say "He got yelled at by his boss for his mistake" to describe the situation?

@richurchoi ... Gave him a lecture about his mistake is correct
"the boss lectured him about his mistake" is more natural to me.
That means it lasted a long time, though. It's a little less common than "yelled at"
It's very common for people to say:
person 1- "my boss yelled at me!"
P2- "he didn't ACTUALLY yell, right?"
P1- "well, no, but he got really mad and talked to me about it for like 20 minutes!"
