This is a difficult question. They mean the same thing. I think "There were..." is something people say more often. "A...were..." is written more often.

They are pretty much the same, but the second one sounds more natural.

@ekakj Both are 100% correct. Personally, I would use the second one. ("There were a large number of stars shining in the sky last night.") It sounds more natural.
"A large number of stars were shining in the sky last night" sounds like a sentence in a novel/book. It is more artistic. What do you think, @AnnaSkipper? Am I right in saying that?

@CaffeinatedCrusader Yeah I agree. First one sounds poetic and like something out of a book, second one sounds like something you'd say in a conversation. I'm American, I don't sound fancy like that.
