"Opposto" (gegensätzlich)
- physically opposite:
"al lato opposto della strada" (at the opposite side of the road)
"al punto opposto del mondo" (at the opposite point of the World)

"Contrario" (entgegengesetzt)
- "conceptually" opposite:
"il significato contrario" (the opposite meaning)
"sono contrario alla tua scelta" (I oppose your choice)

BUT
"Il calzino è al contrario" (the sock is inside-out) [one could argue that the sock isn't anywhere physically opposite to anything, but conceptually, that is not the way the sock is supposed to be, or rather, it is the opposite of how it is supposed to be worn]

This is a very generic approach, I think it is safer to refer to a dictionary when in doubt, because I'm sure there are many pesky exceptions.
