¿Qué significa шарик ?

I’ve been reading Bulgakov’s Heart of a Dog and they call the dog “Шарик”. In the book the dog says he shouldn’t be called that way because he’s thin, not fat, but I’ve looked for the word on the dictionary and it says it means balloon, pen, so I’m confused!??

yes, it means what you wrote. In Russia a lot of people name their dogs "Шарик" [Sharik].

just name of dog. it is very popular name. it mean "balloon" as you said, but no one doesn't translate it, because it is name.

Yes, it's a very wide-spread Russian dog's name Шарик (capital-written). But otherwise шарик (little/small balloon/ball) is a diminutive of шар (balloon/ball), which is round and could be "fat", "thick" in a metaphoric way. So, there's no contradiction. A pen is "шариковая ручка" (coz there's a little ball on the tip of a pen, and this mechanism assists in writing with a pen. Agree?) 🤗

Шарик is a very common dog name and it means a little ball (маленький шар). I doubt it has connection with balloons. I think dogs are used to be called so because small fluffy puppies look like little balls.

@Goose_500 Интересно, что в чешском языке распространено имя собаки Жерик - пока слово как шарик здесь воопще не существует.
