The basic idea is the following
tun: to do (rarely used as you would use "to do" though, it's honestly not that frequent in German). You will most commonly encounter it with adjectives ("weh tun" (to hurt) for example)
machen: mostly "to produce", there is often a direct, tangible result. It also sometimes serves the role of "to do" when you would link it with a noun in order to describe an activity
Hausaufgaben machen (to do homework)
Sport machen (to do sports)
