Depending on your gender, if you're a male and you tell another male that he is "bonito" it's kinda weird but telling females that they are "guapa" it's okay no matter your gender.

I would say it’s not weird to call females guapa and males bonito, but definitely it’s more common to hear people calling females bonita and males guapo.

Is not weird but is not correct to call males bonito is better to say guapo, but to call guapa to females it is correct.
- Español (México)
BonitO it's commonly used to objects, and yes its weird.
Guapa is nice to female, and for male instead of bonito you can use GUAPO.

Actually, you can still call males "bonito" but it often has a "cute" connotation
- Español (México)
@SiennaStar is used for objects,
el coche es bonito
car is pretty,
ellos compraron una bonita casa
they bought a pretty house
when talking about babys and kids
el bebe esta bonito, the baby is cute
ella es una niña bonita
she is a cute girl
sometimes teenagers say
Tengo una novia bonita
I Have a cute girlfriend, bonita is used often when a very young woman has a pretty face but but its not taken in account Her personality, her intelligence, for women when talking about older women, 15, 16, 17, but generally over 18 years of age, in which their beauty, personality and their qualities in general are taken into account are called guapa, for men when he is a baby Or kid is called bonito, but when he is teenager Or adult is called guapo,

Their fragile masculinity gets shredded if they get called "Bonito" better be careful in that regard. "guapo" would be the most "appropriate" word I guess.

@miaomiaomiiao Bueno, creo que depende de la persona, yo no me siento mal si me dicen "bonito" o "lindo", no sé si ser heteroflexible influya pero no afecta a mi masculinidad

@SiennaStar definitely! 😂 But some could actually get offended, specially if they are native speakers.

truth to be told. we're not as open minded as you guys are, especially locals, who tend to be the worst. there's still lots of LGBTfobia, so if you're a boy and you call another boy 'bonito' as a reference of saying you think he's good looking... things might not end up well. (fragile masculinity culture).
if you call a girl 'guapa' make sure to not be a complete stranger bc we still have in Latin America and maybe in Spain too this problem of street harassment. I think it'd be better to start with 'bonita' which sounds nicer to compliment women.
- Español (México)
bare this in mind
bonitx, as @VictoriaOrt said, has a 'cute' connotation.
guapx, on the other hand has a 'sexy' connotation. At least in Latin America. however, it's more common to hear this in Spain as a carefree word. in Latino countries is like second level(?
men tend to preferred being called 'guapo' bc of this sexy connotation. y'know (big, massive, masculine) (ego issues)
men tend to not enjoy being called 'bonito' bc it might sound like they're cute/delicate.
