Just now I looked up the word "grocery store" on Google and when I saw the pictures that came up I noticed they look pretty much the same as what a supermarket looks like. Is there any difference?

I think many people use the terms interchangeably, but the main difference would be that a "grocery store" could be small or large whereas a "supermarket" is by definition a large store.
Another difference is that a grocery store may sometimes just focus on food/produce whereas a supermarket always has a very large selection of food items plus common household items like cleaning supplies for example.

Not really these days. A long time ago a grocery store had less things. Fruits and vegetables, rice, bread, pasta and some household items like soap and tissues. Maybe they had meat, but most people went to a butcher for meat. Also for bread they often went to a bakery. And so on.
But supermarkets were made and became popular but people still called them grocery stores.

@pythonpoole@Jdorie Thank you so much guys! I'm glad my message was understood, I hope I didn't make many mistakes. I'm still not that sure if "came up" or "look pretty much the same as what a supermarket looks like" were correct though.
