무겁다 is original form of verb.
It is the way of speaking. 무겁다 also can be a present tense.
이 돌은 무겁다. (address the situation)
이 돌은 무거워요. (speech to someone)

yeah.. ㅂ at the bottom of Korean verbs and adjectives becomes ㅗ or ㅜ when it directly meets ㅓ/ㅏ in many cases... i assume this is very frustrating for foreigners. these are some examples.
고맙+어 => 고마워
반갑+어 => 반가워
가볍+어 => 가벼워
이롭+어서 => 이로워서
외롭+어서 => 외로워서
덥+어서 => 더워서
춥+어서 => 추워서
but not all of them do.
잡+아 => 잡아
접+어서 => 접어서
