How do you(or general people in Germany )think about Leni Riefenstahl and Marlene Dietrich? Are they popular or infamous?

I know this question could be a sensitive one, but I’m interested in that to write an essay.

As artists I can respect them both. The only thing I don't like about Riefenstahl is her view about herself during NS-times.
She tried to play the victim, which she definitely was not. That moral flaw overshadows her work in my eyes.

I have heard the name Marlene Dietrich before but I have no clue who both of them are. sorry

i have never heard from Leni Riefenstahl before and i think Marlene Dietrich was an actress. Younger generation do not know them quiet well i think

everyone over the age of 35 knows about them, at least if they have an educated view of germany's past, but both are neither famous nor infamous to younger people - they just don't know theses names at all. It a shame, but that's how it is.

I guess Japanese people don't know their name, too unless they are interested in wartime or movie history.
I feel it is ”interesting” and important to know the link between war and cultures, arts.

@Bikila Fair enough, I also don't really know the names of Japanese artists from that period. But for a German at least it is a shame not to know Riefenstahl - without her work, no modern movie would look like it does, all cameramen and directors borrow from her way of filming and her sense of aesthetics (which, unfortunately, she used a lot for propaganda in the Third Reich period).

@frofa Yes, her works are very important in history of movie. She was definitely talented and skillful. I heard, George Lucas was somehow inspired by her film, ”Triumph des Willens ”(, which may be difficult to watch in Germany? )
Anyway, people should know such a person (actually, in Japan we don't know propaganda movie- director, too )
