What is the difference between the following sentences?
1. The building is of historical importance.
2. The building is historically important.
Am I correct in understanding that the first sentence sounds formal and the second one sounds informal? Are there any other differences?

There's no more differences. Also, the first one is not necessarily formal compared to the second one. You could use either one in a formal conversation.
