when talking about flowers, bloom is used for a single flower and blossom talks about the whole tree or a lot of flowers or it describes the process (the flower blooms at the beginning of April) (the tree blossoms in spring) (oh look the flowers in the garden are blossoming\blooming) also these words are used metaphorically (she blossomed after the storm passed)...
