"sandwichs au fromage" - Why is there "au"?

It's a sandwich WITH cheese in it.
'Sandwich fromage' would be completely wrong.
To talk about food, we something can have a different flavors, we ask 'A quoi?', and the reply is ''à la/au''..... :
Un sandwich à quoi ? Un sandwich à la viande, un sandwich au fromage.
Une glace à quoi ? Une glace à la menthe, une glace au chocolat.
Un fromage, un chocolat, un boeuf, = au
Une (feuille de) menthe, une viande, une framboise = à la
