There's not a definite rule, but here's the general difference between them: לך is the dative pronoun. It's used when whoever you're talking about is the indirect object of the sentence. It's sort of like saying "for you", but it won't be translated this way 100% of the times. אלייך is an allative pronoun, it described a movement towards something. It's kind of like saying "towards you". It's usually used when talking about actual directions, but like in all languages some verbs just prefer some prepositions (or prepositional pronouns in this case) and there's no real reason or explanation for it.

I came to you for answers.
התכוונתי אליו.
I meant him/I was talking about him. (as in you want to clarify who you were talking about).
