They both imply that something makes no sense
In addition to this implication, absurd implies something is unreal while ridiculous implies that something should be ridiculed or scorned.
It is every common that this words are used interchangeably however ridiculous is normally used to describe a situation or person in a lighter sense while absurd seems more serious.
That’s absurd/ridiculous , Robert would never do that.
