here's an example...He asked the "previous" winner how to win the contest. In this case it means the person who won the last time. The word "prior" could be substituted in the place of the word "previous"...He asked the "prior" winner how to win the contest. They may not always be interchangable though, the context of the sentence will always be the deciding factor
