I just asked Wiki:
The name is also sometimes used as a male (middle) name. This was historically the case in many Central European countries and still is the case in countries with strong Catholic traditions, where it signified patronage of the Virgin Mary (French-speakers often did the same with Marie).
It's just a sign of good luck and wishful thinking, I guess 🤔

Примечательно, что в современной Германии, в соответствии с законом, Мария — единственное женское имя, которое может использоваться в составе мужского. В качестве примера известных носителей такого «второго имени» среди мужчин можно назвать композитора Карла Марию фон Вебера, либреттиста и оперного режиссёра Франческо Марию Пьяве, поэта Райнера Марию Рильке, политика Чезаре Марию де Векки, писателя Эриха Марию Ремарка.
То есть отдельно этим именем мужчин не называют.

"Maria" is only possible as 2nd given Name in some (catholic?) regions. 1st Name has to be male for a man.

It's possible to have more than one given names - in your examples: "Erich + Maria"
family name: "Remark"
Other example: Johann Wolfgang (von) Goethe
2 given names: Johann + Wolfgang, family name: Goethe

The second name is rather symbolic, often no one even knows about it... A friend of mine has even two second names, so it's three names plus the last name. However, everyone just calls him by his first name.
