Pregunta de Corea Del Sur
Where did having big eyes as a standard of beauty in Korea came from? Was it from ancient times or was it from influence of other cultures and places? (e.g: China / Western Countries)?
Is there any proof that having big eyes meant you were higher class? Someone told me that the Korean beauty standard of having big eyes is simply from preference and higher class, and not from china or western influence.

Basically it came from difference of shape of eyes. It caused curiosity, and wonder. And some people might thought as big eyed men from west countries are greater than them in the late 18th century when world trading were growing.
Even more, as korea got more modernized korean admired people who had big eyes(especailly with double eyelids) as they were a lot more like western people. Typical single eyelid person was considered so traditional and even a poor one.
Nowadays korean both like single/double eyelids because we found them all attractive. But still many people have surgery on eyes to have big and double eyelids as those are the keypoints of perfect beauty.

Many standards of beauty in Korean came from ancient Korea. They are white skin, thin and long fingers, egg shape of chin line, clear and deep eyes(in my opinion, it doesn't include big eyes), etc. Several portraits and literature from ancient depict this standard of beauty.
I don't think it was a symbol of royalty. It's more like the standard of protagonists or heroes in those novels and portraits.
Some standard probably came from other cultures such as a double eyed line and big eyes.

@pascala34 Interesting..Do you mean those what you called 'deep eyes' are like the natural eyes most koreans have? Heres a picture. I see that the eyes are not really seen as big. I saw this picture before I think..Did the koreans also desire thin body in ancient korea? I think the paintings show this as well.

@dolgorae53 Thats nice. I've never heard of koreans think westerners are superior or better than them though. In history, I heard that europeans were looked down upon, especially by East and Southeast Asians. These people were seen as barbarians. I think this idea is slowly fading away as the West and East Asia are getting more powerful..Southeast Asia got colonized so I don't think they see Western culture as inferior anymore, but not superior either. Also, I'm not sure about what you said, but single eyelids considered poor? I don't think so cause alot of koreans mostly have single eyelids. I never heard of having monolids meant you were poor or basic..I think in conclusion maybe this ideal comes from globalization, as you said.

@banana_milktea I don't think Big eyes is a standard of beauty in Korean traditionally. I assume this concept started several decades ago.
About the Deep eyes, I actually don't know how to explain this but the thing is that it's not about the external beauty. it's more of the internal.
According to the depiction of novels from ancient, a slender waist was considered a standard of men and women. For men, wide shoulders are too.
I'm not sure if you already know this, Korea is the fastest-changing country all over the world for almost every aspect. The standard if beauty too. The speed of change is really incredible. I'm not sure how we're going to be changed in 10 years from now on.

from what I know Korea's beauty standards have changed through its history, but some things have always stayed there and two of them are fair skin and clean-cut features.
And these two things are often misunderstood by quite a number of foreigners and even some Koreans themselves, that it's (totally) Western-influenced.
Some examples: fair skin was preferred from Gojoseon period, and around 16-17c in Japan, facial lotion was sold advertised "made with the latest technique from Joseon", and during Goryeo period it was recorded people had bath 3-4 times a day, and bathed their babies in peach-steeped water for fairer-toned skin. In Joseon period, people sought for not only fair, but also clean, blemish-free skin (which modern day Korean women also seek for).
As for big eyes (namely double eyelids), I guess it's more of Western influence.
I guess single eyelid or smaller eyes weren't very preferred as it's not likely followed by well-chiselled face.
