"It smells the Earth" would be used when telling a story or narrating something's actions. "It goes outside. Then, it smells the Earth. Next, it eats some grass."

"It smells like the Earth" is used when something has a smell that makes you think of Earth. "When I play outside and sniff my clothes, it smells like the Earth."

I think it's something like:
"It smells the Earth" = "지구 냄새를 맡다"
"It smells like the Earth" = "지구 냄새를 같다"

And they are both real phrases, so neither is incorrect. Just be sure to use them in the correct way. 👍
