"He was in the front of the crowd" means he was part of the crowd, and located at the front part of it.
"He was in front of the crowd" means he wasn't part of the crowd, but was located apart from it and in front of it.

"He was in the front of the crowd" means he was part of the crowd, and located at the front part of it.
"He was in front of the crowd" means he wasn't part of the crowd, but was located apart from it and in front of it.

"He was in the front of the crowd" means that he was in the crowd, just in the front of it, like one of the first rows of it but "He was in front of the crowd" means that he was not in the crowd but in front of it. In the first one, he's in the crowd, the second one, he is not.
