Why are the verbs conjugated with -서 in this lyrics? What do they mean when they're conjugated like this?
니가 보고 싶어서
너무 보고 싶어서
안 되는 줄 알면서
시간을 되돌리려 해

(lyrics are from "Say yes" by 세븐틴 (SEVENTEEN), this is how the song starts)

어미(ending) '-아/어서' expresses reason/cause or order in time

배고파서 밥을 먹었다
아파서 결석을 했다
도서관에 가서 책을 읽는다

배고프다 + -아서 → 배고프- + -아서 → 배고파서
아프다 + -아서 → (same pattern)
가다 + -아서 → 가- + -아서 → 가서 (아 of -아서 absorbs into stem's 아 vowel)

알면서 has 어미 '-면서' (알- + -면서)

The correct grammar point is 아/어/여서 depending on what verb you are conjugating, and it is used to connect one phrase to other phrase by using the meaning of 'because'. So, for example, in the song, it can be translated as
니가 보고 싶어서 = because I miss you)
너무 보고 싶어서 = because I really miss you/I miss you so much
안 되는 줄 알면서 = because I know it's not working
시간을 되돌리려 해 = I'm trying to turn back time

But I still don't get what -면서 means and how it is applied to the lyrics. 😥

It says that -면서 is for more than 2 verbs happening at the same time (which I guess are 보고 싶다, 보고 싶다, 알다 and also 하다?) but it can also mean a contradiction.

Can you please give me more examples of -면서 and why are the lyrics 알면서 and not 알서? 🤔

= though I know it's not working

-어서/아서/여서 and -면서 are different. -면서 indicates that two statements happens at the same time or that two statements are in contradiction.

@morilattttte just pointing out again that the ending is '-아서/-어서' (depending on preceeding vowel) & '-여서' (exclusive for 하다)…all three forms are the same. 서 is not an ending. 알다 + -아서 (ㅏ in 알, so -아서. vowel harmony.) → 알아서 가다 + -아서 (vowel harmony) →(가아서)('ㅏ' duplicated. absorbs into stem)→ 가서 서다 + -어서 (V Harmony)→(again. 'ㅓ' duplicate, absorbs)→서서 주다 + -어서 (V harmony)→주어서(→줘서. short form) 보다 + -아서 (V harmony)→보아서(→봐서. same as 주어서/줘서) Now, the lyrics go like this: ①네가 보고 싶어서 ('네가' is standard btw… I really hope songwriters stop using '니가' in lyrics😫 the impact of ㅐ-ㅔconfusion is just so bad…) ②너무 보고 싶어서 (basically ① repeated) ③안 되는 줄 알면서 ④시간을 되돌리려 해 and these are actually ①→④ & ③→④ put together, right? so if I rewrite the lines into one sentence: 네가 보고 싶어서, 안 되는 줄 알면서 시간을 되돌리려고 해 now with translation→ "I intend/desire/mean to turn back time 시간을 되돌리려고 해" "because I miss you so much 네가 너무 보고 싶어서" "as/even though I know I shouldn't (하면) 안 되는 줄 알면서" and that's it :) In some cases, '-면서' can imply both functions simultaneously, and the lyrics is THE case. (both are related after all, that's why '-면서' expresses either of them) So '안 되는 줄 알아서 시간을 되돌리려 해' won't work. "I'm trying to turn back time BECAUSE I know I shouldn't"?
