"I went ON to" implies to me that these things were done in sequence, one after the other and maybe even are customarily done in that order, and furthermore that whatever you went on to is possibly of a higher tier somehow (of difficulty, prestige, whatever) than what came before.
You can say "I got up, ate breakfast, and brushed my teeth, then read the paper." You're telling me what you did this morning but not building up to anything. One doesn't need to do them in that order necessarily, and there's nothing more-anything about reading the paper than there is about brushing your teeth.
You can say "I started training to run a mile, then ten, then went on to complete a marathon", you imply that you grew in your abilities as a runner. Or "On Hot Ones, the host starts the guest out with a mild hot sauce before moving on to spicier ones". Because the sauces get hotter and hotter as they go. Or "He came without anything to his name, and went on to become a hero to many" to imply a success story.
I hope this makes sense & helps you with understanding the nuance!
