Instituto y Colegio serían algo así como un lugar privado o público pero con gran reconocimiento.
Cole es una abreviación de Colegio, es una forma informal de llamar al colegio que vas o irías.
Escuela es algo así como un colegio pero del estado, gobierno y público.

This is in Spain:
"Colegio" and "escuela" are the same, but in Spain we tend to say more "colegio". "Cole" is the abbreviation of "colegio" and it is mostly said by little children. In the "colegio/escuela" children study "infantil" (between 3 and 6 years) that is not obligatory and "primaria" (between 6 and 12 years).
"Instituto" is the place where children study secundary school (Secundaria) (between 12 and 16 years old) and "bachiller/bachillerato" (between 16 and 18 years).
To sum up:
-Colegio/escuela: Infantil and Primaria (3-12 y.o)
-Instituto: Secundaria and Bachillerato (12-18 y.o)
Then, we (people who want) start the university (universidad).

Are there different types of secondary schools depending on the education level or do all students go to the same type of "instituto"? because in Germany we have 3 types of secondary schools and only one of them allows you to go to university after it

@Language274
"Instituto " is just a place, so there doesn't exist different high schools. What we can choose is the type of "bachillerato". We can choose "bachillerato de ciencias", "bachillerato de letras" and "bachillerato de arte". Not a lot of people choose the last one, and with them three you are able to go to the university. In "bachillerato de ciencias" you can pick different subjects so you can be doing "Ciencias de la salud" with subjects like "biology", "chemistry", etc, or be doing "Ciencias tecnológicas" with subjects like physics, technology, etc. But in Sciences you can mix all them, for example I'm doing Physics, Geology and Computing, so I am not part from "Ciencias de la salud" neither from "Ciencias tecnológicas". Then, in "letras" you choose between "humanidades" and "sociales", but I don't know too much about it. I think in "sociales" people do Maths and Economy and in "humanidades" they do Latin and Greek.
