On Tuesday, I asked a unknown colleague for help and he replied me for asking the details and told that he would like to help me. I really appreciate it. On Friday, my boss let me ask him how the thing is going. How can I do it without giving him any pressure and offense?

You can say "I just want to ask, how is the thing going so far? Are you having any troubles?"
I always ask "Are you having any troubles" because it sounds like you care and there's less pressure.
