it’s okay to use it in general, just like “guys” you do not use it when there are only women !

“chicos” is general, you can refer them to boys and girls in a group.
Or you can use ”chicos"for a group of boys and "chicas" for a group of girls

But unlike English, it would be strange to use "chicos" for a group of adults. In such case you may simply stick to "gente" or "personas", and when saying "you guys" we simply say "ustedes"
