@ilike0225 I read it again and “the second” refers to the moment that they cut their hair.
“The second they did it” implies when they got their hair cut.
So ever since they first went bald, they’ve been wanting to look like they aren’t.
Sorry for the confusion!
Seconds in time go past quickly, so this means that they started thinking about it instantly. That’s what the saying “The second I did _” means.

Usually when people have all their hair cut off as a gesture for someone else, they know someone with cancer or another illness. Sometimes cancer treatment can cause all of your hair to fall out. Going bald with them will mean they’re not alone, symbolically.
The speaker seems to be wondering what they can do it make it appear like they aren’t bald, even though they are. Some bald people use wigs or wear hats. This can make it look like they aren’t actually bald.
