Would you say that you, as a Brit, sometimes have trouble understanding a song that's sung in an American accent as opposed to one with a British accent or is that okay?

It's usually fine, especially since there's a lot of american tv programmes we watch in the uk too. But, there are different accents across America, so perhaps there's some american accent that isn't so commonly heard in the uk that could be hard, but I can't think of an example.

Most English-language songs are sung in a "neutral" accent that sounds very much like a standard General American accent, so no. A lot of British people "sound American" when they sing, so we definitely don't have an issue, although certain words like "can" and "can't" can be difficult to distinguish in songs with this "neutral" accent.

@askingsaint yea that's true but I think everyone, be it a native or not, might find themselves struggling at distinguishing these two, but it's almost almost pretty clear because of the context, so ya..
and you're right, most songs are sung in a more American sounding manner, which, to me, seems a bit strange.. But I've come to understand that this is probably because of the heavy influence America has on the UK and the world in general and many singers probably have music from American artists as a role model and associate singing with that accent.. Sorry my writing must sound a bit of a mess, but I'm quite tired haha, I hope you understand what I want to say

@kathyog The singing accent thing actually isn't entirely because of the influence of America on the English-speaking world, although I agree that this probably has some affect on it. It's because of the way that sounds behave when singing, which often results in changes to vowel sounds which make the song sound like it's being sung in an American accent. It's not that common for people to have the same accent in singing as they do in speaking, regardless of what their original accent is, and especially if their original accent isn't an American one. It's not impossible for someone to "retain" their accent when singing, but it's definitely less common.
