Thóc để chỉ số nhiều của hạt thóc hoặc ko cần nhấn mạnh về số lượng. Hạt thóc và hạt lúa như nhau. Lúa và thóc ko giống nhau. Lúa để chỉ cây lúa. Thóc để chỉ hạt thóc.

Ở miền khác thì không biết, còn ở miền bắc, lúa là cây, hạt lúa là hạt của nó khi còn ở trên cây, khi lúa đã chín được thu hoạch và đem đi tuốt thì người ta sẽ gọi nó là thóc hoặc hạt thóc. Hạt thóc đem đi xát sẽ thành ra hạt gạo, hạt gạo đem nấu sẽ thành hạt cơm.
Hạt lúa -> hạt thóc -> hạt gạo -> hạt cơm
