“For so long” is more emotional and suggests that the speaker misses or wants the thing that is missing. Here are some examples:
I haven’t gone horseback riding for a long time.
I haven’t gone horseback riding for so long.
Both are fine. But this one is a bit weird. It makes me wonder what the rest of the story is!
The police officer hasn’t stopped my father for speeding for so long.

Thank you so much! What about these sentences?
I've been learning English for a long time
I've been learning English for so long
I've been learning English for a long time
I've been learning English for so long
- Inglés (US)
Both are correct. The first one is neutral. You have been studying English for a few years. The second one has some emotion or opinion - you have been studying English for a very long time and you are disappointed that you aren’t better. Or maybe you have been studying English for a very long time and you have come to love the weird grammar and strange spelling. Or even you have been studying English for a very long time and you are getting bored! “So long” always indicates that there is something else - there is a bit of a story.
