it means to give someone an advantage,a boost or maybe help him/her

can you also use this to express that someone has helped you a lot?

it is usually used when a person has helped you acquire something that will give you advantage over other people .. ( like a headstart). for example: he gave me a leg up in starting my own business(maybe a financial help)
