Yes, men usually go to a barber, women go to a hairdresser.
A barber is generally exclusively for men, a hairdresser is generally for women.
However, "hair salon" is becoming more for both sexes.

@Gregpwx thanks. I don’t think we have them here. Maybe very old fashioned places. I think we mostly have hair salons where they have both men and women.

@Shlom Yeah the old-fashioned barber is with the pole and everything, those are 90% or more male workers and customers. Sometimes they are even more of a hangout than an actual barber shop

"I am going to the barber today" // men only
"I am going to the barbershop today" // men only
"I have an appointment at the salon tomorrow" // unisex. However it is unclear, as that could mean hair, nails, etc. If a man says it, it probably means hair
"I'm going to the hairdresser this afternoon" // men would rarely say this
