Traditional journalism includes a number of stages of editing before anything is published. Like someone getting past a bouncer at a nightclub (a modern type of gatekeeper), for an article to get into the newspaper it has to meet criteria.
Social media currently short-circuits a lot of editorial stages except the author's own.

Here “gatekeeper” suggests that the news/media filters or controls the information to prevent or reduce certain information/communication getting through. However it is also supposed to provide a higher level of integrity, but unfortunately sometimes expresses one-sided (biased) viewpoints.
Communication through social media is often completely unchecked. This means that there is complete freedom of speech but there is a risk that the information could be inaccurate, completely false or biased.
