@knizmknj the first sentence combines the two clauses, the two sentences separately is not wrong but it would be the way a child learning writing would write it out.
I went to the grocery store. I bought vegetables. —-> I went to the grocery store and bought vegetables.
He is tall. He has bad posture. —>
He is tall, but he has bad posture.
I am a man. I like cars ->
I am a man who likes cars.
I am a man that likes cars.
I am a man and I like cars (least natural)

"David is a boy who plays football well." In this sentence, the fact that he plays football well feels very important to David's character. It feels like football is one of the most important things in David's life. If you said "David is a man who cooks well." about an adult, as a listener I might think that David is a professional chef because you're linking his existence to a hobby / talent / verb.
"David is a boy. He plays football well." feels like football is less important to David. You could go on to say other things: "David is a boy. He plays football well. He's also an amazing artist. He loves to swim. David gets good grades." etc.
