No difference in meaning.
"Placed" sounds like you are telling a story.
"put" is the casual way you would say it in conversation. If you were speaking to someone else, you would say "put"
"placed" is more bookish, poetry, song, story, videogame, artform, etc.

There isn't really a difference, but as a writer, the first one sounds a bit more gentle and caring than the second, if that makes sense!

In my opinion, placed sounds more formal, and as if he did it very gently and caringly, while put is more general, and could mean he did it gently, carelessly, aggressively, or something like that.
