They both mean "gill". However, "agalla" means "branquia", not the other way around. In short, "agalla" is the more colloquial term.

We could say that we use branquia y agallas for the same thing when we talk about fish, unless you're an expert. In that case they probably have a slight difference.

We also use agallas to say we have courage.
Generally they translate "You have g*ts" as " Tienes agallas".

I don't know the word gallas. Unless you're talking about the lady of the rooster 'rosster' 🤭 but that would be gallina.

Trust me, I have seen 'g*ts' as 'agallas' a lot!

I've been told that's not a nice word, and some times, some people translate it with expressions I don't like, specially in the Spain Spanish. 😂 So, just for prevention 🤭

They sometimes use it as 'balls'.
'Blas' o 'cjones'. In México they don't consider 'balls' as a bad word but it is kind of vulgar. And it doesn't sound good to me, It's just a personal preference. 🤭

@justmw Bolas y cojones sounds hilarious to me. I am curious though. Who exactly uses the word Guts to refer to male genitalia? I have not come across this before and I know my fair share of sexual jokes. I work in a shop with some men who have very foul mouths.

I've noticed that in some movies the use these two to translate guts in the Spanish subtitles. I've seen way more times the word 'agallas' but I've also seen the other two. It depends on the person translating, of course.

@justmw Thank you for your opinion. But I urge you to reconsider. If you cannot think of a concrete example where Guts = Dick then maybe you are remembering something incorrectly. Conversely, I would be delighted to be wrong here since I am always on the lookout for a new vulgar term to use.

@marksutherin87 What I meant is that "branquias" is the proper term for "gills". A biologist will never say "agallas". The word "agallas" has many meanings apart from "gills", but one of them is "branquias".

Also, as the other person said, the word "gallas" doesn't exist in Spanish.

Oh no. I guess I wasn't clear enough.
I know Guts Dick and Balls are not the same. At least not in the Spanish I speak and hear.
And I didn't say guts is a bad word nor that is the same as dick.
I said that I've heard before that is not a very nice word. And I have also heard and seen that sometimes is translated as balls in Spanish. That's it. But I'm pretty sure you will find Spanish speakers who have a different idea or experience with these words. See ya!
