The Greek word for Christ is Χριστός. I'm not sure why, but the X represents the first letter of Χριστός (Which is the greek letter "chi", not our X)

I believe X-mas is just a shortening of the word Christmas. I have also heard that those who don't believe in god,take away the word christ because they still celebrate christmas,but not in a religious way
