Do you think there's a good way to say goodbye?
I mean, the culture of saying goodbye. Like, when you need to hang up the phone;
Or when you need to graduate and possibly you won't see your friends for a long time;
Or when you're moving to another city or a country.
Probably "see you soon" or "see you again" don't count much in the last two situations😅

When it comes to these
Bye - (see you next time)
Goodbye - (maybe I will see you again after a very long time or never)
See ya - (see you soon very shortly)
Farewell (often seen in books or movies but it means Goodbye)
Buh-Bye / Bye-Bye - (same as Bye but I personally think it sounds more cute!)
you can also say
See ya later or See ya soon (ONLY if you know you will see someone again)
These are all good wasy to say bye, but the worst one is probably just a simple wave. Some people who just wave for "hi" or "bye" is considered rude because speaking to someone here is viewed as good mannerism. So please be sure to wave and speak or just speak when greeting and saying bye to someone ^^

Everyone will lean towards different ways to express themselves, but here are some phrases that I would probably say:
- when hanging up the phone:
Love you, bye!
Talk to you later!
Thanks for calling!
I'm happy we got to talk!
Call me anytime!
- when graduating and won't see friends for a long time:
Take care, and best of luck!
I hope we can hang out again sometime!
I'm sure we'll see each other again sometime!
- when moving:
I'm going to miss you!
We'll see each other again!
We'll keep in touch!
I'll text you my new address!
We can have videocalls!
Love you!
Thanks for everything!

@InquisitiveGuitar Thank you sooo much! And here's a thing about all these byes…I don't really know if they mean it or if I should mean it,
Like, "Call me anytime" "Keep in touch"

@Pumpk-a-boo I'm glad to help! To be honest, I think it's pretty common to say some of these "goodbyes" without actually meaning it 😅. It's kind of like saying you have good intentions to see/talk to these people again, but technically there isn't an obligation. Depending on the person, one can choose to follow through with what they said or not (of course sometimes it does have emotional results, however. For example, maybe my little brother will grow up and remember for the rest of his life "You said you were gonna be here for me, and you never were!" This is an extreme example)
Does this answer your question? :)

@InquisitiveGuitar Yeah thank you!
I just don't really know when to take words literally. And yeah, I can tell it's said out of good intentions but for me, when I say them, I seem to mean it (?) as a foreign language taken for it's literal meaning.

@InquisitiveGuitar Also…by "it's pretty common to say some of these 'good byes' without actually meaning it" I guess there's no bad(?) byes?

@Pumpk-a-boo I totally got you. In my opinion, it depends on the speaker whether or not they really mean it. If you say it and always mean it, there's nothing wrong with that though 🙂. In my experience, people may react surprised (in a good way) and happy when you keep your word to contact them again
(You can say "for me, I mean what I say because I take words literally when I speak a foreign language." I think that sounds pretty natural, casual, and clear)
What about the culture in China? Are "goodbyes" and "see/talk to you later" taken literally?

@InquisitiveGuitar Thank you! Does that mean the listener or the receiver would be clueless if the speaker mean it or not? 😅I was going to say in a vulnerable position (may not be accurate though)
And thanks for your correction! I appreciate it! Yeah, kinda my default foreign language mode lol.
Yeah we do have that thing like 再见 (see you again) or 下次再聊 (talk until next time)
But when you go that specific as you suggested "Call me anytime!" I'd tend to think it's being serious (But who knows, at least among my friends it's serious haha)

@Pumpk-a-boo I think it depends on the context if there are bad goodbyes or not. For example, there's a quote "Don't go to bed angry" and some people also say things like "If you and your partner are angry at each other, at least say 'I love you' or give each other a goodnight kiss before you go to sleep." This shows that it's considered a bad goodbye to end a day on negative terms with someone.
So, to summarize, I don't think words alone create a bad goodbye. I think it has to do with the context too. Hateful words, hurtful actions, unpleasant/unaddressed emotions, lack of closure > these create bad goodbyes.

@InquisitiveGuitar That would bring me to the question when I actually mean it or want to mean it…like, it seems to mean less to native speakers even when I say it with the sincere intention. It may signal like "I don't want to see you again"? idk
Also, as for your little brother, well, I'm pretty much that kind of person who doesn't want to make promises I cannot keep so I'd really watch my words too closely.😅

@Pumpk-a-boo I can't answer for all native speakers as this question goes deep into the way that language and culture affects individual thoughts and expectations (you ask good questions), but I guess what I try to do is not have too high expectations for people to follow through with what they say (not to sound mean, but not everyone does), and I try to be true to myself. We can always make our intentions clear, even by saying something as simple as "I mean it 😎"
I hope this helps!
Thanks for sharing about your culture too.
