1. 我问他这个东西卖多少钱。
2. 他说，这个卖20。
3. 我花了20。
Note that:
1. A positive sentence requires a full stop even if it may contain a interrogative clause. (Same as English, 'I ask him how much is it.')
2. 回答 is slightly too formal for daily use, just use 说. Also, if you quote someone's words, either ① add a comma between 说/回答/... and the quote (indirect quote, He says that ... 他说，……), or ② add a colon between 说/回答/... and the quote, then add quotation marks around the quote (direct quote, he says “...” 他说：“……。”).
3. 买 can only be followed by the item you buy, not the amount of money. If you want to say how much money it costs, use 花 (掛かる・掛ける):
这个东西花了我20块。
＝我花了20块(买这个东西)。
This thing cost me 20 yuan.
I spent 20 yuan (to buy it).
